Guardian – Abstract Thistle Art Print
It wasn’t my first encounter with Ukrainian modernism, but something shifted during my visit to the In the Eye of the Storm exhibition at the Royal Academy. Seeing Sonya Delaunay’s bold, rhythmic forms in that space sparked something deeper. For the first time, I felt drawn not just to admire, but to create. That’s how this evolving series began: part modernist experiment, part self-reflection.
It includes Guardian, a stylized thistle—Scotland’s national flower—which I often pass on my summer walks through London’s parks. In this piece, the thistle’s spiky silhouette becomes a protective emblem, its layered shapes and vivid palette evoking both the resilience of nature and the warmth of long days under the British sun.
Guardian seamlessly melds the precision of modernist abstraction with the organic silhouette of a thistle, creating a work that feels both contemporary and steeped in heritage. The sharp, interlocking planes recall early 20th-century avant-garde experiments, while the sun-washed palette and playful linework give it an inviting, almost nostalgic warmth. As a gallery piece, it would stand out for its bold color contrasts and symbolic depth—perfect for collectors who want something thought-provoking and bright.
